What is Green Tea?

If you are on a weight loss diet and hoping to shed a few extra pounds, then green tea is a great substitute for those high-calorie, low-nutrition soft drinks. Green tea is a product of Camellia sinesis, the same plant that makes black tea. The main difference between the two types of tea lies in the way in which they are processed. Levels of Caffeine in Green Tea

The question “does green tea have caffeine” is easy to answer. To begin with, you should note that each brand of green tea for weight loss is essentially different. For instance, while Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus will contain 12mg of caffeine per 8oz. serving, Snapple Diet Green Tea has 14mg of caffeine per 8oz. serving.

Warning: Most green teas for weight loss are sold in 20oz. single-serving bottles. However, these list nutrition information for 8oz. servings. You may therefore want to divide a 20 oz. bottle into 2.5 servings first. This will help you to avoid having to calculate how much caffeine your particular bottle of green tea contains. A 20 oz. bottle of green tea which lists 14mg of caffeine per serving will contain 50mg of caffeine.

Caffeine and Weight Loss

To date, research on the effects of caffeine on weight loss remain inconclusive. There are however theories that suggest that caffeine either speeds up the body’s metabolic rate or serves as an appetite suppressant. Other suggestions are that caffeine has diuretic properties that cause the body to lose water weight. But even with the lack of any conclusive findings on the specific effects of caffeine on weight loss, this stimulant has not been found to hamper the body’s ability to lose weight.
